Topic areas include the three pillars of business ethics, moral philosophy, corporate social responsibility, ethical dilemmas, and ethical decision-making.

Introduction to the Alberta Land Management System

Many municipal employees are responsible for working with and managing information related to land, especially as it relates to title registry, maps and the Alberta Land Titles Spatial Information System (SPIN2). Having a basic understanding of the Alberta land management system, maps and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), how to locate a parcel of land using a map and using SPIN 2 are useful skill sets which will assist you to better carry out some of your job functions related to land. This course introduces basic information about land management and mapping and will be a suggested prerequisite for the Land Titles course currently under development.

Property Assessment and Taxation, Module 1

This course is for individuals employed as Tax Clerks or other municipal employees with limited experience in property assessment and taxation - the major system of revenue generation for municipalities in Alberta. These activities happen within the framework of the Municipal Government Act (MGA), which is the primary and comprehensive statute that governs how municipalities conduct their activities.

The course includes:

  • general background information on property assessment;
  • a practice-oriented overview of the internal processes by which municipalities conduct property assessments and manage their assessment records (assessment roll);
  • a section on the assessment roll as it relates to tax levying activities;
  • a case study;
  • a section with additional resources.
